Social media is part of our lives and 100% part of the business landscape for any entrepreneur.
Love it or hate it, it’s here and we need to get good at it!
And although we need to ensure social media isn’t our ONLY marketing strategy – because as I always say we shouldn’t build empires on land we don’t own! – it is a marketing strategy that, to be successful, we need to put in time and effort in planning and execution.
There are LOADS of social media sites – more than the 3 or 4 that might spring straight to mind when I mention the words “social media”, so one hack to success is to ensure we know who is in our target market (who’s going to buy what we are selling) and choosing the social platforms where those people hang out.
Once we are on the right platforms, we can attract the right people and make sales by embracing the three following secret hacks:
- SHOW UP
It’s obvious, right?
It’s in the title – it’s called SOCIAL media – so in essence we already know we need to show up and be social.
Be showing up, is actually the hardest part for so many.
I’m not talking about showing up as a brand or a logo or a product or a service, I’m talking about showing up as YOU.
The person behind the brand, the logo, the products, the service.
YOU.
This is especially critical for people in the competitive small business space.
People do business with people they KNOW, LIKE and TRUST.
And no one can get to know you, like you or trust you if they don’t know who you are.
So, the first tip for getting a return on your investment into social media (whether that be time or money) is actually SHOWING UP.
Be you. There’s only one of you – it’s your uniqueness that makes you someone people want to buy from you and your business!
Embrace showing up.
I promise you, you will see immediate results.
- HAVE A STRATEGY
In life and in business we need to know where we are going, otherwise, the saying goes, any road will do.
You need to have a strategy – which is basically just a PLAN.
A plan of how you are going to use social media to grow your business.
For my clients, to start with, we talk about a strategy in the simple of terms.
What’s the goal and how are we going to use social media to reach that goal?
Want to do more keynote speaking – post more about past speaking gigs and let people know what you speak about and how they can find out more and book you.
Want to sell more candles – post about candles! But not just the features of your candles, the benefits – really tell me why I should buy your candles over and above everyone else’s candles and tell me often because I’m busy and so is social media!
Want to build your email list more – share how I can join, create and share some lead magnets that solve my biggest business challenges and tell me what I’ll get if I join, and again, tell me often!
Strategy – it’s not complicated but it is necessary if you want results from your social media.
- SELL
Yep, there I said it!
We need to SELL more on social media.
I’m all for leading with VALUE and give, give, give before you ask, but seriously, some accounts I follow and some people on socials I LOVE, but I have NO idea what they sell or how I can buy it.
Selling is not a dirty word.
What is dirty is putting in all this effort to run a business and going broke because you can’t make enough sales to stay in business.
Sell and sell often.
But in a friendly, “this will benefit you” way.
And PLEASE make it simple.
Simple to know what you sell.
Simple to know how to purchase it.
And a simple check out system when I get there, finally, with my credit card in hand – ready to buy.
Remember a confused buyer doesn’t buy!
We have to ask for the sale often because we live in a busy and competitive world where standing out can be hard enough, but to finally stand out and lose the sale because we forgot to ask for it – that’s tragic.
We are in business to make money and that’s totally ok and I’d say rather expected!
As a marketing thought leader and momentum creator, I work with lots of people who need help with marketing and see lots of people buying and selling marketing courses, but have you ever invested in learning how to sell?
Food for thought.
Find someone who sells well on social media, not only makes you super comfortable but sells to you before you even now you’ve been asked to pull out your credit card (because it’s so seamless and natural) and follow them – learn from them.
So that’s the 3S’s of Social Media Success:
- Show up
- Strategy
- Sell
If you can embrace the principles of the 3S’s, social media will have a much bigger return on investment, time, energy and money, than you might have now.
Remember, if we play SMALL, we stay SMALL.
