How 1 Idea Changed the Way Australian’s Buy – Episode 97

Hey there, my fabulous listener, welcome to episode 97 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast.

Thank you for lending me your ears today – I know you have lots of choices, so I sincerely appreciate me being one of them!

If you’re a first time listener, super super welcome, I am so pleased to have you here.  I am your host Jenn Donovan, and it’s my job, via this podcast, social media and everywhere else actually, to make your business life simpler.

I’m a thought leader when it comes to marketing here in Australia and I’m a marketing strategist for small business.

Why? Because business can be lonely and hard and complicated and it’s hardly ever easy, but it should be simple or at least simpler, so that’s my commitment you to on the Small Business Made Simple podcast!

This episode is sponsored by Spend With Us – an online marketplace for rural and regional businesses, where you can spend your dollars knowing you are supporting 600+ rural and regional businesses.  Thinking gift cards for Christmas?  Buy a Spend With Us gift card and they can choose to spend it with any of our vendors!

You know how sometimes because you know something, you know it SO well, that you forget people don’t know what you’re on about?!?!

Yep me too!

Which is why when someone mentioned to me via a DM, hey you know that Spend With Us site that’s been sponsoring your podcast the last few weeks, is that your business?

Yes! It is!  It’s another part of Jenn – another part of the vast world of doing business with Jenn!

I was so surprised, and I thought, you know I need to be an episode about me!

Just kidding – well sort of kidding.

Today is about me a little.  It’s about me and two other trailblazing women who I am lucky enough to call my business partners chatting to you about how 1 small idea can change the world for the better.

Before I introduce you to Sarah and Lauren, some back story – in case I forgot to tell you in the interview!

12 months ago, in October 31 2019, I was driving home from a week away speaking (remember that, when we could go and speak in front of live audiences or be in live audiences) – anyway, I’d been around the southern parts of the Riverina in NSW talking to small business owners who were tired.

The drought had been so long and so tiring, so many of the small business owners had lost all enthusiasm heading into Christmas 2019.  I know, and they know, if farmers don’t have money, towns don’t have money.

The #buyfromthebush was doing the rounds for a week or so now but those untechy savvy business owners didn’t know what to do or how to get involved.

So, on my 3 hour drive home over plains of nothing, I hatched a plan to start a Facebook group called Buy From a Bush Business.

Fast forward 12 months and that group has almost 300,000 people in it – yep, almost a city and I’m the mayor – apparently!

In June this year I connected with Lauren and Sarah who had Spent With Us – an online marketplace for the same target audience I had – rural and regional small business.

I wanted a website marketplace and they had one and so the rest is history!

We joined forces, created a company, build a new platform and that’s what you see today.

A funny thing, I’ve never actually met Sarah and Lauren in real life, but together we are changing the world.

This episode is to inspire.  To show you that one small idea can lead to BIG things and that collaboration, not competition, is not just something I say, it’s something I live.

I really hope you enjoy this episode.  It’s a bit more from the heart than the others – but I kind of figure after 96 episodes we’re almost family right – you and me?

Enjoy my friend,

I hope you enjoyed the little look into the other side of my business life.

If you’ve got a little idea in your head and you know it could have a positive impact on change for someone or something, then, my advice – just do it!

I had no idea the movement I was about to create with when I thought I would do a good deed and put up a Facebook group for my clients and my friends to sell to each other over the coming Christmas buying season in 2019.

So, you don’t always have to see the future or see the impact, sometimes you just need to READY.  FIRE.  AIM because the world doesn’t need more people “aiming” to do something.

Ok, so that’s it for ep 97 – I’ll be back for 98 next Thursday – holy crap on a cracker – 98 ….

Have a fabulous week.

If you’re enjoying this podcast, which if you have listened to here – you hopefully are, don’t forget to subscribe, share this episode with another superstar business owner who’s doing the daily grind and would appreciate someone making their business simpler, and leave a rating or review to show how much you are loving this free weekly content.

Thanks to Phillipa Smith who left me a fabulous review – “Have listened to the first 20 episodes in a week and I am so excited and had a light bulb moment today about my WHY and it’s different to what I have thought for 4 years.  Thank you!  I am dreaming big. Can’t wait to listen to all the other episodes.  Thank you Jenn so so much” x

Phillipa – what a fabulous review.  Thank you.  And wow – 20 episodes in 1 week – that’s a whole lot of Jenn time!

See you next week on the podcast for episode 98!  But in the meantime, let’s hang out on social and get social on social – you’ll find me on Instagram, Facebook and my fav LinkedIn.

But whatever you do,

……..remember small business peeps, as my opening song says, there’s no point in dreaming small!
