Crafting the Perfect Elevator Pitch for Your Business – Podcast Episode 360
Hey there, my friend, welcome to episode 360 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast.
Thanks for leading me your ears right now – I know you have lots of other things you could be doing or listening to – so I appreciate you.
With the 2025 Social Media and Marketing Conference only [not saying out loud] sleeps away – but more than 3 weeks …. I thought it would be cool to chat today about how you would answer the question, What do you do, if you were attending an event – like the 2025 Social Media Marketing Conference! But any event really.
What’s your elevator pitch?
But before we get there, did you listen to last weeks few episodes? I had Jade Warne on the podcast, who’s one of my speakers at the conference who’s topic is around making money from social media and how you do that and the other episode with was Caleb Maxwell and we chatting about video – making video with no stress and no big expenses. In fact, as Caleb explains, it was about the outcome, not the video itself! If you didn’t get a chance to listen to those, then do so after this!
The Social Media and Marketing Conference looks like it will be a SELL OUT which is making me SOOO happy. So, if you’re sitting on the fence, maybe coming or maybe not – then jump off the fence and get your ticket before they go! The VIP ones, today, there’s only about 4 left!
And good news is that you can now make 4 easy payments. I get the stress of the budget right now – I SOOOO do – so 4 easy payments gives you less excuses why you can’t come! Friday 29th August, 700 Bourke Street, Melbourne.
Love to spend the day with you! You might learn even more than you do listening to me every week!
Okay, onto this week’s episode.
Your elevator pitch! Why is it called that? Because you need to be able to say what you do in the time it would take to ride an elevator!
No matter how great your product or service is, if you can’t communicate it clearly and concisely, you’re missing a huge opportunity. Whether you’re at a networking event, speaking with a potential client, or meeting someone new, having a killer elevator pitch can make all the difference.
So, let’s say you are at a conference (or conference), and someone asks you what you do – what would you say? Can you say it concisely? Succinctly?
Having a clear elevator pitch is essential for making connections and potentially landing opportunities. In fact, it’s often the first step toward building meaningful relationships with clients, partners, or investors.
To network well, you do need an answer to this question. Your pitch must be
- Memorable
- Interesting
- Succinct and
- Make the person listening curious enough to ask a question or react in a positive way – hopefully saying something like – oh wow – that’s exactly what I’ve been looking for or that’s the exact help I need ….
So, let’s dig a little deeper.
- Make it brief – we’ve covered this already – 30 seconds – that’s the time you’ve got to gain someone’s attention, and I’ll tell you, that’s a heck of a lot longer than you have on social media or online! If you’re elevator pitching online – you’d better, make it 10 seconds or less!
- Make it persuasive – it might be short, but it needs to be punch and compelling. Compelling enough to spark the interest of the reader or listener.
- Share a little about yourself. What you are and what do you do? It’s not the time to be boastful, it’s the time to show your audience what you can do for them!
- This isn’t going to come to you straight away and when you’ve got it – you haven’t! You need to practice and be flexible in your approach – remember who your audience is, every time you do your pitch! Make sure you are speaking in the tone, and language of your buyer and/or audience.
- Mention your goal or the goal you have for your audience or buyer. Think “out of all the people who do what I do, why should they choose me”.
- DON’T SPEAK TOO FAST – you only have 30 seconds or so, but that doesn’t mean that you should cram in 45 seconds of speech! It needs to sound like you – no rushed, not polished, not informal – just you!
- Don’t ramble, don’t frown, and don’t talk in one single monotone – we’ll all go to sleep otherwise!
- Focus on what’s essential – that’s all – what do they need to know to know, like and trust you, to buy from you or to engage further with you.
Google’s elevator pitch that got them their first big investor was “Google organises the world’s information and makes it universally accessible”.
Apple in 2001 – “carry 1000 songs in your top pocket”.
Uber – Uber provides fast, reliable, and affordable transportation at the touch of a button. Whether you need a ride across town or to the airport, Uber gets you where you need to go with ease.”
Ok, you’re on an elevator and your ideal client turns to you and says, “so what do you do?”
I help small business owners make marketing a priority so that they can earn what they deserve and make a bigger difference in their communities, without burning out in the process.
(That’s mine).
Another example:
“Hi, I’m Sally Smith, a virtual marketer who helps busy small business owners get more done, in less time, to earn more profits. I’m currently taking on new clients. What business activity do you dislike doing the most?”
Ok, your turn.
Give it a go.
Answer the question – what do you do? Practice will make perfect or will make better each time – so although you do 100% need an answer to this question prior to going to a networking event, you 100% do not need a perfect answer. Just start networking more. Your business will thank you for it.
Here’s a challenge for you: I want you to craft your own elevator pitch and share it with me on social media. Tag me in your post, and I’ll share my favourite ones on my feed.
You’ve got this, friend! A solid elevator pitch is all about communicating your value in a way that resonates with your audience, and now you know how to nail it.
Get yours ready for when you next network or for when you come along to the 2025 Social Media and Marketing Conference on August 29th in Melbourne!
If we aren’t hanging out on social media then let’s get social on social – you’ll find me on Instagram, Facebook, and my fav LinkedIn.
But whatever you do,
…….. remember small business peep, as my opening song says, there’s no point in dreaming small!
