Are You the Product in Your Business? (Here’s Why That Matters More Than You Think)
During a recent keynote I delivered, someone asked me a question that stopped me in my tracks. It wasn’t flashy or complex. But it cut straight to the heart of something that many small business owners struggle with – especially in the early days.
The question?
“How much time and energy should go into choosing a business name?”
It came from someone brand new in business, looking around at all the quirky, keyword-heavy, attention-grabbing names others were using. And wondering – is that what really matters?
Now, I’ll be honest… my answer was the ultimate marketing cliché: It depends.
But let me explain why that answer is far more useful than it first sounds.
Your Customers Aren’t Just Buying Your Product – They’re Buying You
If you’re running a service-based business – whether you’re a coach, celebrant, accountant, social media manager, photographer, or anything in between – then this is the truth you need to hear:
You are the product.
Your clients are buying your expertise, your energy, your way of solving their problem. They aren’t choosing your business name – they’re choosing you.
So yes, your brand matters. But if your brand doesn’t include you in it, then you’re missing the most important piece of your marketing puzzle.
This is personal branding. And it’s not just a nice-to-have in 2025. It’s essential.
The Branding Mindset Shift That Changes Everything
I know what you’re thinking:
“But marketing isn’t supposed to be about me. It’s about my customer.”
Yes. Absolutely. But here’s where many business owners get it wrong…
Your marketing needs to be about your customer – but told through you.
Why?
Because people don’t trust faceless brands anymore. They trust humans. Real people. Especially in service industries.
Your clients want to feel like they know you. Like they’re choosing someone they can trust, someone they connect with, someone they’ll enjoy working with.
So if your socials, your emails, your website… don’t show your face, your voice, your perspective – how can they feel that connection?
Here’s the Litmus Test
Ask yourself this:
If you stepped away from your business for a week, a month, or even permanently… what happens?
If things grind to a halt – then you are the product. And that’s not a problem. That’s an opportunity.
The sooner you embrace that, the sooner your marketing will work better – because you’ll finally be showcasing the very thing that makes you different from every other business out there: yourself.
A Challenge for You This Week
Take a scroll through your most recent posts or emails.
-
Are you hiding behind your logo?
-
Are you defaulting to “professional” over “personal”?
-
Are you speaking from your own voice – or a generic one?
If the answer is yes to any of those, I challenge you to show up differently this week.
Post a tip. Share a behind-the-scenes. Tell a quick story about how you work. Remind people why you do what you do. Show them you.
Because at the end of the day, people buy from people. And they’ll buy from you when they can see you.
