Before I get started on today’s episode – how did you go with last week’s episode? Did you manage to listen in to my chat with Tracey from TM Solicitors all about the 3 legal documents every small business should have?
No? Well go and check that episode out as soon as you’ve finished this one and reach out with any questions to either me or Tracey. The links for Tracey’s business were in the show notes at www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au/193
So, today, we are talking about lead magnets! More specifically, how to create a lead magnet that converts.
Firstly, though – what’s a lead magnet?
A lead magnet is what marketers aka you (because remember if you are in business, then you are in the business of marketing!), use to create a compelling reason for a prospect to connect with your brand or business that can deliver them value. Value enough that they are willing to exchange their name and email address for your valuable piece of content – aka the lead magnet.
The Lead Magnet should be a free piece of content, but something people would be willing to pay for – as in it has to be that GOOD!
A lead magnet is often a PDF downloadable document, but it doesn’t have to be a PDF document to download – there are LOTS of ways you can create a lead magnet.
In fact, I have a little sheet for you that’s got 69 of them – 69 Irresistible Lead Magnet Ideas and funnily enough, you don’t need to give your email address for it – just click the link and up it will come!
If you want to see the list of 69 Irresistible Lead Magnet Ideas go to https://socialmediaandmarketing.com.au/magnetideas
So, let’s go through the steps to creating one for your business.
The first step to creating a converting a lead magnet is to identify WHO your magnet is for.
This might seem obvious – but unfortunately, it’s not a given. Some people come up with fabulous ideas for a lead magnet – but it’s not actually about their client – but more about them (aka perhaps YOU!).
So, once you know WHO the lead magnet is for, step 2 is identifying the ONE problem you want to solve.
The important word here is ONE – you aren’t solving war and peace, just 1 problem.
What is their biggest issue, headache, or challenge your prospective buyer is looking for help to solve? Remember before your prospect wants to purchase a solution, they want to know that you understand their problem.
So, make a list – what’s their biggest problem? What’s the NUMBER 1 problem or concern you can solve?
So now we have the WHO, and we have the ONE problem that we are going to solve.
Step 3 is giving your lead magnet a name! A compelling title! If your title isn’t attractive to your WHO, then you can have the best one ever, but they won’t notice it! Sad, right?
You might need to brainstorm this bit.
Here’s some examples to help get your brain into gear!

- 3 Incredibly Simple Ways to Make More Money
- The ULTIMATE guide to smart property investment
- The Number 1 Secret of Highly Productive People

- 108 Social Media Content Creation Ideas

You will see a pattern – the magnet name gives the outcome to the reader – that’s part of the attraction! 108 Social Media Content Creation Ideas – you know you are going to get 108 of them. The ULTIMATE guide smart property investment – you (the subscriber) are downloading it knowing that this is the only guide they need. You can see what I am getting at here.
So, my biggest hint is, DO NOT over promise and under deliver. This piece of content might be FREE, but overpromising and underdelivering will have effects on your brand you will never know.
Over delivering is where we want to be. Freebie piece of content that makes them think “geez Louise, if I get this for free, imagine what I would get when I pay for xxx”.
Step 5 is choosing your format – remember I gave you a link to 69 of them before. Again that link is https://socialmediaandmarketing.com.au/magnetideas (PS – you don’t need to leave your email address, the information is just there for you as soon as you click the link!).
Of course, Step 6 is creating the Lead Magnet and Step 7 is putting it out to the world and marketing to your audience that you have one. That you have a lead magnet, for FREE, that will solve their biggest challenge.
There are too many bits and bobs, shortcuts and angels to talk about Steps 6 and 7 on a podcast – but I’d be happy to help if you need.
I have an offer of an hour strategy call to build your lead magnet, answer any queries or questions and to help you with the tech and marketing. Just use this link to book https://bit.ly/leadmagnetwithjenn
The cost is only $99 for the hour – which more normal hourly rate is far double that, so it’s a deal just for you my amazing listener.
Lead magnets are the most successful way I have built my email list.
My best lead magnet has been my 108 Social Media Content Creation Ideas – you can download that by going to www.108social.com.au if you haven’t got it already.
Otherwise, other super successful lead magnets have been free webinars that I have hosted.
To hear another podcast on this subject – same but different, go and listen to episode 105 – www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au/105
Otherwise, start thinking about what your lead magnet could be.
Answer the questions above and check out the list of 69 suggestions. That link again – https://socialmediaandmarketing.com.au/magnetideas
Let’s continue the chat in my Like Minded Business Owners Facebook group – you can join on Facebook if you haven’t already. In fact, if you have a lead magnet – put it in the group for people to download or take up your offer. I think Thursdays are #offerthursday – so you can do it on that day!
Oh, and talking about my Like Minded Business Owners Facebook group – I have some amazing guests coming in there to do lives with me this year. I am super excited by this. From finance experts to PR and marketing experts (besides me) to Law experts – they are all coming on to give you their time and do some Q&As with the group.
Another amazing reason to come and join that community!
